The 2nd Engineer is responsible for assisting the 1st Engineer and Chief Engineer in managing the engine room and maintaining all technical machinery onboard. Key duties include performing watchkeeping operations, overseeing maintenance and repair of main engines, auxiliary equipment, and emergency systems like Hi-Fog, bilge, and fire suppression. The 2nd Engineer monitors engine room operations, supervises crew under direction, and ensures compliance with planned maintenance systems (PMS). They uphold strict safety, environmental, and health standards in line with company protocols. Responsibilities also include inventory support, emergency response readiness, maintaining technical records, and acting according to the Chief Engineer’s standing orders and corporate regulations.
Qualifications
- Valid Certificate of Competency (CoC) as 2nd Engineer (STCW Reg. III/2) with all relevant STCW certificates (Basic Safety, Advanced Firefighting, PSC, etc.)
- Minimum one year of watchkeeping experience or prior service as 2nd Engineer on other vessels.
- Familiar with engine room automation systems and computerized maintenance systems (e.g., AMOS).
- Knowledge of safety, environmental, and maritime regulations (SOLAS, MARPOL, MLC).
- MES training and corporate training compliance.
- Strong maintenance and troubleshooting skills.
- High-voltage management knowledge is an advantage.
- Excellent English communication, teamwork, and leadership abilities.
- Strong safety focus, adaptability, and organizational skills.
