The Second Officer is responsible for the safe navigation of the vessel during their watch, ensuring adherence to COLREGs and voyage schedules while maintaining safety for all onboard. Duties include bridge watchkeeping, voyage planning, updating nautical publications, and managing navigational systems such as ECDIS and GMDSS. The Second Officer supports the Master and Staff Captain in communications, ship stability, and safety drills, and may supervise junior officers and cadets. They ensure proper use and maintenance of navigational and safety equipment, lead mooring operations if assigned, and oversee key systems like the ship’s master clock. Emergency response readiness and safety compliance are critical aspects of the role.
Qualifications
- Completed studies or technical school in nautical sciences; diploma or master’s degree preferred.
- Valid STCW II/1 or II/2 Certificate of Competency (Chief Mate license preferred).
- Minimum 2 years’ experience as an Officer on Watch, including 1 year as Watch Leader.
- Strong leadership, teamwork, and communication skills * Excellent knowledge of Bridge Resource Management and bridge equipment.
- Proficient in navigation, maritime regulations, and safety protocols (SOLAS, STCW, MARPOL, MLC, ISM, ISPS).
- Skilled in using ECDIS, radar, and vessel management systems.
- Fluent in English; computer literate; stress-resilient.
