The Chief Engineer is a senior management officer with full responsibility for the engine department, including the operation, maintenance, and repair of all technical equipment and systems onboard. This role ensures efficient, safe, and compliant operation of ship machinery and systems while protecting company reputation and resources. Key responsibilities include overseeing propulsion, electrical, and hotel service systems; supervising planned maintenance and inspections; managing fuel, lube, and spare parts inventory; and enforcing compliance with flag state, class, environmental, and safety regulations. The Chief Engineer provides technical guidance to the Captain, ensures crew training and welfare, and maintains accurate technical documentation and records.
Qualifications
- Valid Chief Engineer’s License in accordance with STCW regulations.
- Diploma or Master’s degree in technical ship operations or a related field preferred.
- Extensive experience as Chief Engineer or Senior Engineer on cruise ships.
- Strong leadership, management, and team coordination abilities.
- Proficient in Engine Room Resource Management (ERM) and technical operations.
- In-depth knowledge of shipboard systems, including electro-technical and facility management.
- Familiarity with SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW, MLC, USPH, and USCG regulations.
- Advanced understanding of fuel management, environmental compliance, and efficiency.
- Skilled in using PMS, QMS, LMS, and AMOS; strong general computer literacy.
- Fluent in English with excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and in rotational assignments.
