The Chief Officer (or Chief Mate or First Officer) is the second-in-command aboard a cruise ship, reporting directly to the Captain and leading the Deck Department. Responsible for the ship's navigation, safety, stability, and overall deck operations, the Chief Officer oversees watchkeeping, bridge equipment, voyage planning, and mooring duties. They manage and mentor junior officers, ensure compliance with safety protocols, and support crew training and emergency drills. Depending on resort assignment, they may also handle GMDSS systems, ECDIS updates, nautical publications, and bridge documentation. The Chief Officer plays a key role in maintaining operational efficiency and enforcing a strong safety culture throughout the vessel.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Nautical Science; technical school background preferred.
  • Valid STCW II/2 Chief Mate Unlimited CoC with all mandatory STCW certifications.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as Chief Officer, including maintenance responsibilities.
  • Prior experience on cruise ships; expedition or polar region experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of maritime regulations (SOLAS, STCW, MARPOL, MLC) and cruise-specific standards (USPH, USCG),
  • Strong leadership, communication, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in Bridge Resource Management, bridge equipment, and computer systems.
  • Team player with resilience under pressure and a guest-focused mindset.
