A Deck Utility crew member may perform a wide range of duties to support the overall maintenance, safety, and cleanliness of the ship. Responsibilities can include cleaning and polishing interior and exterior surfaces, waste collection and sorting, and assisting with painting, varnishing, sanding, greasing, and other maintenance tasks. They support mooring and tender boat operations, perform gangway watches, and assist with the maintenance of FW tanks, BW tanks, and void spaces. Deck Utilities also aid in security and safety duties, such as fire watch or lifeboat support, handle equipment setup, and may assist with guest services like arranging deck chairs or providing towels.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 6 months sea service as a Deck Rating preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of ship maintenance, including hull preservation and deck equipment upkeep.
  • Familiarity with ISPS Code and ship access regulations.
  • Fluency in English for clear onboard communication.
  • Strong physical fitness and stamina to handle manual tasks.
  • Understanding of safety procedures, public health, and environmental protocols.
  • Team player with effective communication skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and cleaning schedules accurately.
  • Problem-solving skills for minor maintenance tasks.
