The Garbage Handler/Waste Disposal Operator is responsible for managing all aspects of waste handling on board in compliance with safety, environmental, and USPH regulations. Duties include collecting and segregating waste by type, operating and maintaining waste processing equipment such as compactors, incinerators, and pulpers, and ensuring the cleanliness of all waste-related facilities. The role involves receiving, processing, storing, and discharging waste, assisting with offloading at ports, and maintaining detailed records of waste management activities. Familiarity with the ship’s environmental programs, safety policies, and waste management systems is essential, along with strong teamwork and adherence to MARPOL standards.

Qualifications

  • 6 months to 1 year of experience as a Garbage Handler on a cruise or passenger vessel preferred.
  • General deck or shipboard experience also considered.
  • Familiarity with MARPOL regulations and environmental/safety protocols essential.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and carrying.
  • Proficiency in English for effective communication and understanding instructions.
  • Flexible and adaptable in daily duties and changing operational needs.
  • Knowledge of shipboard waste handling procedures and equipment is advantageous.
  • Strong awareness of hygiene, safety, and environmental standards required.
