The Helmsman (or Quartermaster) is responsible for steering the vessel as directed by the bridge officer, ensuring it stays on its assigned course and speed. They must accurately interpret helm commands such as “right rudder” or “steady as you go,” and may assist in monitoring navigational equipment like radar and chart plotters. Helmsmen often serve as visual lookouts, scanning for hazards or vessels, and must communicate clearly using standard navigation terminology. In emergencies, they follow critical instructions promptly. When not at the helm, they assist with bridge maintenance, cleaning, and may help train junior crew, supporting overall safe navigation and ship operations.
