An Interior Painter on a cruise ship is responsible for maintaining and restoring the ship's interior painted areas and furniture to their original appearance using correct materials, tools, and techniques. Duties include surface preparation—cleaning, sanding, repairing, and masking—as well as accurate color matching and paint application using brushes, rollers, or spray equipment. The painter must ensure proper use and maintenance of tools, the paint mixing machine, and follow all safety protocols related to hazardous materials and fire prevention. Responsibilities also include keeping the paint locker organized, maintaining stock levels, documenting paint formulas and usage, and ensuring a clean, safe, and tidy workspace. Collaboration with the Chief Carpenter and flexibility to take on additional maintenance tasks as needed is essential.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum 6 months experience on a large cruise vessel preferred.
  • Proven experience as an interior painter, preferably in marine or industrial environments.
  • Skilled in all aspects of interior painting, surface finishing, and furniture refurbishing.
  • Proficient in surface prep techniques: sanding, grinding, brushing, masking.
  • Knowledge of paint types: latex, oil, water-based, lacquer, varnish, tints, and marine-grade coatings * Experienced in brush, roller, and spray painting methods.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work under time pressure.
  • Physically fit, able to work in confined spaces or at heights.
  • Familiarity with safety protocols and STCW certification (if required).
  • Team-oriented with good communication and customer service skills.
  • Fluent in English; additional language skills a plus.
