The Ordinary Seaman supports the Deck Department in maintaining the ship’s cleanliness, safety, and operational readiness. Responsibilities include daily cleaning and maintenance of exterior decks, assisting with mooring, gangway, tender, and paint boat operations, and performing general deck work such as washing, painting, greasing, and sanding under supervision. The role involves bridge and gangway watch duties, participation in fire-fighting, first aid, and safety drills, and adherence to environmental and waste management policies. The seaman is expected to assist in safety and security tasks, maintain water tanks and void spaces, and show willingness to train for promotion to Able Seaman.
Qualifications
- 6 months to 1 year of experience as an Ordinary Seaman on a cruise or passenger vessel preferred.
- Completed apprenticeship as Able Seafarer or similar; Deck Cadet or other sea experience considered.
- STCW II/4 certification (II/5 recommended).
- Familiarity with mooring equipment, line handling, and deck equipment maintenance.
- Basic knowledge of ship hull preservation and general deck operations.
- Understanding of ISPS Code and ship access regulations.
- Minimum knowledge of COLREG for lookout duties.
- Awareness of Bridge Resource Management principles.
- Good communication skills and flexibility in tasks.
- Physically fit and safety-conscious.
