The Third Officer is responsible for executing safe watchkeeping at sea, in port, and at anchor, while supporting departmental side duties. Duties include assisting senior officers with watch operations, voyage planning, GMDSS and navigational equipment, and safety-related tasks such as crew training, drills, and inspections. They manage crew documentation and Italian maritime paperwork, support stability monitoring, and maintain bridge logbooks and publications. The role involves monitoring external communications, maintaining safety culture, conducting safety rounds, and supervising cadet officers. The Third Officer may also lead mooring stations, operate tenders, and ensure compliance with BRM procedures and HESS management systems.
Qualifications
- Completed studies in nautical sciences; diploma or Master’s degree preferred.
- Valid Certificate of Competency (CoC) – OOW (STCW II/1), endorsed by Flag State.
- All required STCW certifications and valid medical certificate.
- Minimum 12 months sea service as a Deck Cadet; prior experience on passenger vessels preferred.
- Strong knowledge of SOLAS, MARPOL, MLC, ISM, ISPS, and navigational regulations.
- Proficient in bridge equipment, BRM procedures, and passage planning.
- Leadership, teamwork, and interpersonal skills to manage a diverse crew.
- Computer literacy and familiarity with maritime software.
- Excellent English communication skills, verbal and written.
- Stress resilience, problem-solving ability, and customer service awareness.
