Engine Fitter

An Engine Fitter is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and fabrication of mechanical components, primarily within the machinery spaces but also throughout the vessel as needed. Duties include machining, welding (electric, gas, TIG), pipe construction and replacement using various materials, and overhaul of mechanical equipment such as pumps and engines. The Fitter maintains the engine workshop, tools, and consumables, and ensures compliance with safety regulations, PPE use, and emergency procedures. Familiarity with technical drawings, measuring instruments, and threading systems is essential. Fitters must be professional and courteous, especially when working in passenger areas.

Qualifications

  • Certificate of apprenticeship in metalworking or ship mechanics, or equivalent qualification.
  • STCW certification required for seafarers, including safety training.
  • At least 3 years of experience onboard vessels as a fitter, mechanic, or assistant fitter.
  • Proficiency in pipe fitting, welding (arc, TIG, MIG, OAW), and machining (including lathe operation).
  • Skilled in overhauling pumps, propulsion, and auxiliary systems.
  • Strong mechanical knowledge of marine engines and ship systems.
  • Ability to read technical drawings and use precision measuring tools.
  • Physically fit, able to lift heavy equipment and work in confined spaces.
  • Good English communication and teamwork skills.
  • High safety awareness and adherence to maritime regulations.
