The HVAC/Refrigeration Engineer is responsible for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of all refrigeration and HVAC systems onboard, including provision plants, chilled water systems, air handling units, and cooled catering equipment. This role includes supervising the HVAC/Refrigeration team, allocating tasks, monitoring performance, and ensuring compliance with safety, environmental, and hygiene standards (HESS, USPH, MARPOL). Duties involve performing preventive and corrective maintenance, troubleshooting electrical faults, updating AMOS maintenance records, controlling refrigerant use, managing spare parts and inventory, and coordinating with shipboard and shore-based management. The engineer is on 24-hour call and must maintain professionalism in passenger-facing areas.

Qualifications

  • Minimum one year of experience as an HVAC or Refrigeration Technician on a large cruise vessel preferred.
  • Secondary school education with formal mechanical or technical training.
  • Diploma in HVAC/Refrigeration maintenance or service.
  • Valid HVAC and EPA certification; certification to handle refrigerants required.
  • Strong knowledge of modern HVAC and refrigeration systems, including fault-finding, repairs, and regular maintenance.
  • Skilled in welding, brazing, and replacement of electrical field devices.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting technical manuals, pipe, and electrical diagrams.
  • Experience in managing small teams and coordinating maintenance tasks.
  • Clear spoken and written English with good radio communication skills.
  • Capable of leading or assisting with dry dock and onboard projects.
