The Security Officer, serving as the leader of the ship's Security Team and Ship Security Officer (SSO) when designated, is responsible for all onboard security operations. This includes implementing and maintaining the Ship Security Plan (SSP), conducting crime prevention, investigations, and ensuring compliance with international and company regulations. Key duties involve managing gangway security, overseeing access control, maintaining security equipment and records, and supervising security personnel. The officer coordinates drills, crew training, and cabin checks, and ensures proper operation of security systems such as CCTV, X-ray, and gangway equipment. They liaise with port authorities, manage master keys, and handle incidents involving theft or missing persons.
Qualifications
- High school diploma required; university degree preferred.
- STCW Basic Safety Certificate essential; Ship Security Officer certification desirable.
- Background in police, military, aviation, or maritime/private security required.
Strong knowledge of ISPS Code, counter-terrorism, emergency response, and maritime security regulations. - Experience in risk assessment, crisis management, and incident investigation.
- Excellent verbal and written English skills; proficiency in a third language is a plus.
- Skilled in operating and maintaining security equipment and systems.
- Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.
- Physically fit to perform patrols and emergency duties.
- Proficient in MS Office, internet tools, and reporting software.
